Quick answer: Biotrue Advanced is a multi-purpose solution for reusable soft contact lenses, including silicone hydrogel lenses. It combines lens cleaning and disinfection with three moisturizing ingredients, 25% more hyaluronan than original Biotrue and a triple-disinfectant system. It is for lens care—not direct use as an eye drop.

Contact-lens comfort is not just about the lens you buy. The way you clean, disinfect and store a reusable lens also matters. Biotrue Advanced is built around that everyday routine, with a formula that puts moisture support alongside the essential cleaning and disinfection jobs.

It is an appealing option if you like the convenience of a multi-purpose solution but want to understand what “Advanced” actually adds.

One solution, several lens-care jobs

A multi-purpose solution can condition, clean, remove protein, rinse, disinfect and store compatible lenses. That convenience is useful, but it still requires the proper rub, rinse and soak steps.

The Canadian product is intended for soft contact lenses, including silicone hydrogel lenses. It is not a universal care solution for every rigid or scleral lens, and it is not a preservative-free saline for filling scleral lenses.

It also must not be put directly into the eye. For lubrication, choose an appropriate eye drop such as Biotrue Dry Eye Relief; see our everyday-drop guide for its different role.

What makes the formula moisture-focused?

Advanced uses hyaluronan, poloxamer and poloxamine as its three moisturizing ingredients. Hyaluronan is a form of the water-loving ingredient used in many eye-care products. The other ingredients contribute to the solution’s cleaning and wetting design.

Bausch + Lomb reports 25% more hyaluronan than original Biotrue, with greater moisture retention on lenses over the first 12 hours in its supporting testing. That claim is about the lenses’ moisture—not a guarantee that everyone will feel comfortable for exactly 12 hours.

The added electrolyte is potassium chloride. The formula also contains erythritol, an antioxidant ingredient intended to help protect hyaluronan. You do not need to memorize the chemistry to appreciate the idea: lens care that pays attention to moisture as well as cleanliness.

Triple disinfection without skipping the basics

The disinfecting system combines polyaminopropyl biguanide, polyquaternium and alexidine. The manufacturer reports killing 99.9% of the germs tested under standardized laboratory conditions. That is a specific test claim, not protection against every organism or permission to cut corners.

Lens safety still depends on clean hands, fresh solution, an appropriate case and the full soaking time. “Advanced” describes the formula, not a faster route through the directions.

The Canadian rub, rinse and soak routine

  1. Wash and dry your hands before handling lenses.
  2. Place at least three drops of solution on each side of a lens and gently rub for 20 seconds.
  3. Rinse each side with the solution for five seconds.
  4. Place the cleaned lenses in the case, cover them with fresh solution and soak for at least four hours.
  5. Discard used case solution after each use. Never top it up.

Follow the full package directions and your eye-care professional’s advice, including instructions for storing lenses you are not wearing immediately. If visible debris remains before insertion, rinse as directed.

Who may appreciate Biotrue Advanced?

It is worth considering for a reusable soft-lens wearer who wants a familiar, straightforward care format with added moisture features. It may also be a sensible next product to discuss if you use original Biotrue and wonder what the updated formula offers.

Our Advanced-versus-original comparison walks through the differences. If your main issue is dry-eye discomfort even without lenses, the complete Biotrue guide helps separate lens care from the day and night drops.

A solution cannot fix a poorly fitting lens or every reason for discomfort. If lenses regularly hurt, make your eyes red or stop feeling comfortable early in the day, do not simply push through. Your prescription, replacement schedule, lens fit and eye surface may need review.

Opening dates and everyday hygiene

Discard remaining solution 90 days after opening, and use it within the printed expiry date. Keep the cap on and the tip away from surfaces. Clean and care for the case according to its directions and replace it as recommended.

Water has no place in lens cleaning or storage, including tap, bottled or distilled water. Saline alone does not disinfect lenses either. Keep your care supplies ready when travelling so an inconvenient evening does not turn into improvising with the wrong liquid.

For daily disposable lenses: discard them after wear. Do not use solution to turn a single-use lens into a reusable one. For pain, significant redness, light sensitivity or changes in vision, remove lenses and seek prompt eye care.

Frequently asked questions

Is Biotrue Advanced preservative-free?

No. It contains a disinfectant/preservative system because it is a lens-care solution. That is different from the preservative-free Biotrue dry-eye drops.

Can I skip rubbing if I soak the lenses?

No. The Canadian directions include rubbing and rinsing before the minimum four-hour soak.

Can I use it for my scleral lenses?

Do not assume so. Follow the specific cleaning and filling system recommended for your lens type.

Can it replace a bedtime eye drop?

No. It cares for lenses outside the eye. The Nighttime Relief guide covers bedtime lubrication, and the value article explains how to avoid buying products for the wrong purpose.
