Biotrue Advanced vs Original Biotrue: What Actually Changed?
If you have used original Biotrue for years, seeing “Advanced” on a newer box raises a reasonable question: is it actually different? Yes. The Canadian formula adds several features, while keeping the familiar multi-purpose care routine.
The changes make Biotrue Advanced an appealing option for a moisture-focused lens routine. They do not mean your old product was ineffective or that everyone must switch immediately.

What original Biotrue already does well

Original Biotrue combines lens-care convenience with a hyaluronan-based moisture approach. Its pH is designed to match healthy tears, and its cleaning system addresses protein deposits.
That is a useful foundation. If a lens-care professional has recommended the product and you are comfortable with it, a newer formula is a choice to consider—not a reason to distrust a routine that works.
Packaging sizes and availability can vary. Use the live product page for the format currently offered by Eye Drop Shop rather than assuming every carton photo shows the same size.
Why Advanced is worth a look

Advanced increases the hyaluronan content and adds poloxamer to the moisturizer combination. It also includes potassium chloride and erythritol, an antioxidant ingredient. These changes give it a stronger moisture-focused feature set on paper.
Its triple-disinfectant system adds alexidine alongside the other disinfectants. That is an actual formula change, not just new branding. Our Advanced product guide explains the design and daily use in more detail.
Do not compare “20 hours” with “12 hours” as if they measure the same thing
Original Biotrue’s moisture messaging refers to hyaluronan remaining on lenses up to 20 hours in supporting testing. The Advanced message highlights more moisture on lenses during the first 12 hours compared with original Biotrue.
One is a retention statement; the other is a comparison over a stated period. A shorter number in one claim does not prove a shorter-lasting product. Neither number tells you how long it is safe to wear your own lenses, and neither guarantees a particular comfort experience.
Follow the wearing schedule prescribed for your lenses. Do not extend it to match a marketing number.
The important routine has not changed
Both Canadian products call for rubbing, rinsing and a soak of at least four hours. Switching to Advanced does not remove a step. You still need fresh solution every time; topping off used liquid defeats the point of disinfecting the lenses properly.
Both solutions are kept out of the eye as direct drops, and neither replaces the appropriate care system for every rigid or scleral lens. They are not saline, and they do not make a daily disposable lens reusable.
For dryness while wearing compatible lenses, Biotrue Dry Eye Relief is a separate option. Read the daytime-drop article rather than trying to use lens solution as a comfort drop.
Should you switch?
If you want the added moisture features and use compatible reusable soft lenses, Advanced is a sensible option to discuss or try within your lens-care advice. It keeps a familiar routine while updating the formula. That is its clearest practical advantage.
If you have had reactions to a lens solution, ask your eye-care professional before changing products. Sensitivity can involve a particular formulation, and “more advanced” does not automatically mean more comfortable for every individual.
Also check whether the discomfort really comes from the care solution. Lens fit, replacement timing, wearing hours and underlying dryness may be more important. The Biotrue brand guide explains how lens care fits alongside day and night lubrication; the nighttime article addresses a different need again.
Frequently asked questions
Is Advanced just a renamed original Biotrue?
No. The Canadian ingredient list and disinfecting system differ.
Does 25% more hyaluronan mean 25% better comfort?
No. It describes ingredient content relative to original Biotrue, not a guaranteed increase in how comfortable your lenses will feel.
Can I mix the two solutions in my case?
Do not mix or top off solutions. Use fresh solution and follow the current product directions.
Where does price fit into the choice?
Compare the current formats and prices, but put compatibility and a comfortable routine first. Our value guide explains why buying the right type of product matters more than chasing one number.
