Dry eye is often described as though the eye simply needs more water. In reality, a stable tear film has interacting lipid, aqueous and mucin-facing components. When tears evaporate too quickly, when the eye does not produce enough aqueous fluid, or when the surface does not hold the tears evenly, similar symptoms can appear: burning, grittiness, fluctuating vision, tired eyes and a need to blink for clarity.

Systane PRO was built around that broader picture. Instead of relying on a single lubricant, it combines three complementary technologies in a multi-dose, preservative-free bottle. This guide explains what each component does, who may benefit, how PRO compares with the rest of the Systane family and what the clinical evidence can—and cannot—tell us.

What is Systane PRO?

Systane PRO is a sterile lubricant eye drop from Alcon. The current Canadian carton describes it as a preservative-free, triple-action product that “hydrates, restores, protects” and provides relief for up to 12 hours. EyeDropShop carries a 10 mL bottle and a two-bottle twin pack.

The formula contains propylene glycol, hydroxypropyl guar (HP-Guar), sodium hyaluronate, mineral oil, dimyristoyl phosphatidylglycerol, polyoxyl 40 stearate, sorbitan tristearate, boric acid, sorbitol and purified water. It may also contain hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide to adjust pH.

What does “triple action” mean?

Triple action is useful shorthand, but it is not three separate medications. It describes three complementary goals:

• Hydrate: sodium hyaluronate and the water-based phase help replenish and retain moisture.
• Restore: lipid nano-droplets are intended to support the lipid portion of the tear film.
• Protect: HP-Guar helps establish a lubricating matrix across the ocular surface.

The design is especially relevant because many people have mixed dry eye. A screen user may blink less completely, increasing evaporation, while also having a reduced tear reservoir. A person with meibomian-gland dysfunction may have an unstable lipid layer but still benefit from aqueous lubrication. Formula breadth can reduce the need to guess between a purely watery drop and a purely lipid-focused emulsion.

How long does Systane PRO last?

The Canadian package states “up to 12 hours.” “Up to” is important: it is not a promise that every person will feel relief for exactly half a day or that one application should replace all others. Duration varies with dry-eye severity, environment, blinking, lid health, contact lenses and individual response.

Alcon's professional material reports that 47% of patients in one study had meaningful symptom relief at 12 hours after a single dose. That is useful context, but it also shows why the claim should not be interpreted as universal. Follow the package directions—one or two drops as needed—and discuss frequent or escalating use with an eye-care professional.

Who is Systane PRO most likely to suit?

Systane PRO is a reasonable product to compare when:

• your symptoms suggest both insufficient lubrication and rapid evaporation;
• you want a preservative-free multi-dose bottle for regular use;
• screen time, heating, air conditioning, wind or travel worsen your comfort;
• you prefer a broad tear-film formula rather than a simple hyaluronate-only drop;
• you wear soft contact lenses and need a compatible lubricant, while understanding it is not sold as a lens rewetting drop.

A thicker gel, ointment, allergy-specific treatment, lid therapy or prescription medication may be more appropriate for another situation. Pain, marked redness, discharge, light sensitivity, injury or sudden vision change should be assessed rather than self-treated as routine dryness.

Is Systane PRO preservative-free?

Yes. The current Canadian Systane PRO is preservative-free even though it comes in a multi-dose bottle. That can be attractive for sensitive eyes and repeated use. Preservative-free does not mean contamination-proof: keep the tip away from the eye, fingers and other surfaces, replace the cap promptly, and discard the bottle three months after opening.

Can you use Systane PRO with contact lenses?

Systane PRO is compatible with soft contact lenses. However, it is not a contact-lens rewetting drop. That distinction matters: a compatible lubricant may be used while lenses are worn according to its label, but it is not marketed to clean, disinfect or directly recondition a lens. Follow the instructions on the exact bottle you receive and your eye-care professional's advice.

PRO is not automatically “stronger” than every other Systane drop. It is the most comprehensive current combination on paper because it brings Hydration's HA/HP-Guar strategy together with Complete's lipid-oriented platform. How does it compare with Thealoz, HYLO, I-DROP and LAB TRIACTIV?

Several leading preservative-free drops at EyeDropShop also address more than simple lubrication, but they use different routes. Thealoz Total combines trehalose, hyaluronic acid and NAAGA; HYLO DUAL INTENSE combines high-viscosity hyaluronate with ectoine; I-DROP MGD uses viscoadaptive hyaluronan with osmoprotective and bioprotective ingredients; LAB TRIACTIV combines cross-linked hyaluronate, trehalose and phospholipid liposomes.

Systane PRO's differentiator is the specific HA + HP-Guar + lipid combination in a preservative-free multi-dose bottle. That may make it a convenient all-rounder, while another product may better match a preference for trehalose, ectoine, a different bottle system or a more gel-like texture. What does the research show?

HP-Guar has been used across the Systane family for years. Randomized and controlled studies of HP-Guar lubricant formulations have reported improvements in tear break-up time, staining or symptoms in selected populations. Studies of Systane Complete's HP-Guar/lipid nanoemulsion also support the concept of treating different dry-eye subtypes with one emulsion.

However, research on an older Systane formula, Systane Hydration or Systane Complete is not the same as a direct independent trial of the exact Canadian PRO formula. Do you need to shake Systane PRO?

Yes. The Canadian instructions say to shake well before use because it is an emulsion containing lipid components.

How many drops should you use?

Instill one or two drops in the affected eye or eyes as needed, then blink. Follow the current label and any personalized instructions from your eye-care professional.

How long is the bottle good after opening?

Discard any remaining solution three months after first opening. Writing the opening date on the carton can make this easier to track.

Why can the first drop be difficult?

Preservative-free multi-dose bottles use a protective delivery design. Before first use, hold the bottle upside down, prime it as directed and discard the initial drop. Do not enlarge or alter the tip.
