EltaMD UV Clear vs UV Physical: Which Should You Choose?

They share a brand name and familiar white-and-red packaging, but UV Clear and UV Physical are not the same sunscreen in different containers. Their UV filters, skincare ingredients, finish and water-resistance guidance lead to meaningfully different choices.
With both back at Eye Drop Shop Canada, you can choose on preference again rather than on what happened to be left in stock. Here is the useful comparison, without making you decode a full ingredient list.

Choose UV Clear if skincare ingredients and everyday feel come first

UV Clear makes a persuasive daily choice if you like the idea of 5% niacinamide alongside your sun protection, prefer a lightweight formula and want the option to skip tint. It is especially popular with oily or blemish-prone skin.
The Clear version also lets you choose your foundation independently. Tinted adds a sheer evening-out effect rather than a full makeup step. If you want to understand that distinction before buying, start with our UV Clear Clear-versus-Tinted guide.
Because UV Clear is a hybrid, it is not the right choice for someone whose main requirement is mineral-only UV filters. Nor does its higher SPF number turn it into a water-resistant sports sunscreen.
Choose UV Physical if mineral filters, matte tint and a larger tube win

UV Physical is the more direct fit when mineral-only actives are non-negotiable. Its matte finish and light tint also make sense if you want a little complexion evening without much makeup. The 85 g tube is a welcome practical feature for generous daily application.
The 40-minute water-resistance rating gives it an activity-related advantage over UV Clear, provided you follow the reapplication directions. It is not waterproof, and a single light tint may not suit every skin tone. Our UV Physical guide goes into both points.
Do not buy it simply because “mineral” sounds like a guarantee of no irritation. Fragrance-free and non-comedogenic are useful formula characteristics, but sensitive skin still deserves a cautious introduction.

Is SPF 46 noticeably better than SPF 41?
Both are broad-spectrum sunscreens above Health Canada’s recommended minimum SPF 30. SPF primarily describes protection against sunburn-producing UVB under test conditions; broad-spectrum labelling addresses UVA protection too. The numbers are not a score for texture, shade matching or skin compatibility.
For this decision, the more useful differences are filters, finish and water resistance. A generous, even application of the sunscreen you enjoy wearing is more useful than a thin, reluctant application of the one with the slightly higher number. Neither rating means you can stay in the sun indefinitely or skip reapplication.
If you have acne-prone, red or sensitive skin
UV Clear’s 5% niacinamide, oil-free feel and positioning make it a natural starting point for many blemish-prone shoppers. UV Physical’s mineral-only actives may appeal more if that is what your sensitive skin has previously tolerated. Both are non-comedogenic, but individual skin can still react.
Avoid turning a label claim into a diagnosis. These are sunscreens, not acne or rosacea treatments. If you already have a routine from a dermatologist, choose an SPF that works with it rather than replacing treatment with a sunscreen purchase. Patch testing is sensible when your skin is reactive.
If tint is the deciding factor
UV Clear gives you a straightforward no-tint option. Its Tinted version and UV Physical both add colour, but they are different formulas with different finishes. Look at a full application in daylight, especially around the jawline. A tiny hand swatch cannot tell you everything.
If neither tint suits you, consider Colorescience No-Show or Face Shield Flex. No-Show takes the untinted mineral route; Flex offers more shade choice and buildable coverage. For luminosity rather than matte tint, see our Flex and Glow comparison. You can also explore the full Colorescience routine without treating one brand as a replacement you are forced to accept.
Our simplest buying advice
If you loved your previous EltaMD formula, you do not need to talk yourself out of it. Return to the texture that worked. If you are new to the line, decide first whether you want mineral-only filters, added tint and water resistance; those answers narrow the choice much faster than reading every marketing claim.
For a light daily pump with niacinamide, our starting point is UV Clear. For matte mineral tint in a larger tube, it is UV Physical. Either way, apply generously before sun exposure, reapply as directed and use a hat and sunglasses. That is a better routine than chasing a perfect sunscreen on paper.
Frequently asked questions
Are UV Clear Tinted and UV Physical the same?
No. UV Clear Tinted is the tinted version of the hybrid UV Clear SPF 46 formula. UV Physical SPF 41 is a separate mineral sunscreen with a different finish and water-resistance rating.
Which is better for oily skin?
Both are oil-free. UV Clear is popular for lightweight daily wear and niacinamide; UV Physical may appeal more if you want a matte, lightly tinted finish.
Which is better for swimming?
Of these two, UV Physical carries a 40-minute water-resistance rating. Follow its label for reapplication and choose protection appropriate to the activity.
Should I switch back from Colorescience?
Only if you prefer EltaMD’s formula or finish. If your Colorescience routine works well, EltaMD’s return does not create a need to change it.
